Young Social Entrepreneur Recognised At Social Enterprise Awards Scotland
Jordan McPhail, 21 – Founder and Managing Director of Aspire Community Solutions was crowned “Social Enterprise Champion – Under 26”. The prestigious awards are the biggest celebration of Social Enterprise in Scotland, recognising innovation, impact and success in the sector.
Social Enterprise Scotland is The Voice of Social Enterprise – uniting social enterprises and their supporters into a strong campaigning force. We’re your gateway to Scotland’s social enterprise community. We’re an independent, Scottish, membership-led organisation, built and controlled by social enterprises. We’re the first point of contact for the media and public and promote a positive vision for social enterprise.
Aspire Community Solutions is an innovate and forward thinking Social Enterprise delivering services in Construction, Groundworks & Landscaping and Cleaning Services across Scotland whilst training up those with barriers to employment and enhancing community spaces. In the last year, Aspire Community Solutions has supported around 30 individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including long term unemployed, ex-offenders and young persons, achieving great success rates – 90% moving into employment, with a further 7% progressing into education or training.
This is not the first time Jordan has been hailed for his success at such a young age, he impressively holds the titles of being the youngest recipient of Social Investment Scotland Loan as well as the youngest recipient of the Build It Award through The Social Entrepreneurs Fund.
Jordan had this to say;
“This award has been a great achievement for myself, I am very humbled and honoured to have been awarded this. I am very proud of what we achieve here at Aspire, this was a team effort and certainly a lot of people have helped me get to where I am. We are a very unique organisation and understand the need to deliver a commercially viable service while delivering Social Impact and I think that’s what has got us this far”
“From humble beginnings growing up in Ferguslie Park, an area of high deprivation and a lack of opportunities. To have a teacher in secondary school tell me that I wouldn’t even be a cleaner in Asda just added to my fire – not only to prove them wrong, but also help other young people and those with barriers to employment. I established Aspire while undergoing my standard grades and have never looked back as in my eyes the only way to do business is through a social enterprise. Being a social entrepreneur is a way of life and I certainly wouldn’t change that as the impact you have on others is life changing.”
Shona Sinclair, Chair of Social Enterprise Scotland, said:
“Congratulations to all the winners of the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2018. A big thanks to everyone who entered the awards this year, reflecting the diverse range of organisations that are helping build a better economy and a fairer Scotland. Alongside our new Chief Executive we look forward to the further growth and development of Scotland’s social enterprise movement.”
